South Downs Way Hike - 08-10-2008

Four Scouts from the Troop completed a two day hike following The South Downs Way.

Friday evening was spent at the hut carrying out pre hike admin and kit check before a trip down to Tescos to by the hike rations. Back at the hut the equipment was checked and rations issued. Each Scout carried his own personal kit fane enough food for two day. For all those taking part, this was their first experience at carrying heavy packs over long distances.

Saturday morning saw a drizzly start as the Scouts were dropped off at the 'Jack and Jill' windmills for the start of the hike. The weather cleared however, it was to stay very windy all day with a stiff breeze coming in off the sea. The first days hike was about 14 miles across the Downs. Each Scout took turns at the navigation. We broke for lunch under the shelter of some bushes before pushing on to Telescombe Youth Hostel.

The evening was spent preparing their meals and chat with the other hostel occupants. The lads turned in early though after their hard days hike.

Morning brought breakfast and some short lessons. One in water filtration and how to obtain drinking water when out hiking, the other was a basic introduction to satallite navigation systems.

The start to the next days hike was a bit damp again but it cleared and all the Scouts completed the 9 miles to Alfriston for the pick-up.

Well done guys, this was a good badge bagging trip.
