Lake District 2008Winter MountaineeringYes, it's February again, that means that members of Lambarde Scout Troop are off to the Lake District to join Scouts and Explorers from across Kent for some serious winter mountaineering. Although this year we did not have the snow, the weather conditions were still very challenging. On Saturday our group climbed The Old Man of Coniston in very windy and wet conditions that tested navigation and walking skills to the limit. On The Sumit Cairn 'Old Man of Coniston''
On Sunday the weather was much milder, however heavy rain fall overnight put the scramble up 'Church Beck' out of bounds so we took in some scrambling up 'Rascal How'. Everyone agreed that the scramble was great fun. Not quite rock climbing with ropes, scrambling involves quite literally pulling yourself over the rocks up the side of the mountain away from the footpaths.
